Freight class is the number that decides what an LTL shipment costs. Get it right and your rate is predictable. Get it wrong and a re-class notice arrives weeks later with a bill attached — which is why freight class generates more billing disputes than any other line in less-than-truckload shipping.
What freight class is
The National Motor Freight Traffic Association publishes the NMFC — a classification system that sorts every commodity into 18 classes, from 50 to 500. Class 50 is the cheapest to ship; class 500 the most expensive. Carriers use the class to price LTL freight, because they are selling trailer space and need a common language for "how much of my truck does this consume, and how much trouble is it."
Note the direction that confuses people: a lower class number means a lower rate. Dense, sturdy, easy-to-stack freight gets class 50–70. Light, bulky, fragile or hazardous freight climbs toward 500.
The four factors behind the number
- Density — pounds per cubic foot. The dominant factor, and the one you can calculate yourself. Bricks are dense and cheap to class; ping-pong balls fill a trailer with air and are not.
- Stowability — how well it loads alongside other freight. Odd shapes, overlength, and anything that cannot be stacked or loaded next to certain commodities rates worse.
- Handling — how much care it needs. Fragile, awkward or non-palletised goods cost the carrier labour and risk.
- Liability — value per pound, and the chance of damage, theft or damaging neighbouring freight. High-value and hazardous goods carry more exposure for the carrier.
Calculating density, which you should do before every quote
Density is arithmetic, not opinion:
- Measure the shipment at its extremes, including the pallet and any overhang: length x width x height in inches.
- Divide by 1,728 to get cubic feet.
- Divide the total weight in pounds by the cubic feet. That is your pounds per cubic foot.
A 48 x 40 x 48-inch pallet is 92,160 cubic inches, or 53.3 cubic feet. At 800 lb that is 15 lb per cubic foot — which lands in the class 70 neighbourhood on a density-based item. Measure the actual loaded height, not the pallet's nominal one: the shrink-wrapped dome on top is chargeable space.
Why re-class bills happen
Carriers run dimensioners at their terminals now — automated scanners that measure and weigh every pallet as it crosses the dock. If your bill of lading says one thing and the machine says another, you get re-rated, plus an inspection fee. The usual causes:
- Guessing the class instead of looking up the NMFC item number.
- Measuring the product and forgetting the pallet, the wrap and the overhang.
- Reusing last shipment's class after the packaging changed.
- Declaring weight from a purchase order rather than a scale.
The defence is unglamorous: measure and weigh every shipment as it actually leaves, and put the real NMFC number on the bill of lading.
Density-based classes and the shift away from guessing
Many NMFC items are now density-based: rather than one fixed class, the commodity has a table where the class follows the measured density. That rewards shippers who pack tightly and measure honestly, and it removes most of the argument — the number is whatever the scale and tape say it is.
