There is no single standard pallet — there are regional standards that disagree with each other, and the disagreement costs money every time freight crosses between them. Here are the dimensions that matter, why the North American and European standards differ, and how to pick one without stranding your freight.

The North American standard: 48 x 40 inches

The GMA pallet — named for the Grocery Manufacturers Association — is 48 x 40 inches (1219 x 1016 mm) and accounts for roughly a third of all new pallets made in the United States. It is a four-way stringer pallet, usually hardwood, typically about 6.5 inches tall empty and weighing 30 to 40 pounds. Rated capacity is commonly quoted around 4,600 lb dynamic — moving on a forklift — with static capacity higher.

The 48 x 40 dimension is not arbitrary. It is built around the trailer: a 53-foot van is about 100 inches wide inside, so two 48-inch pallet faces fit across with room to spare, and 40-inch depths run down the length in neat rows. Everything in North American warehousing — rack bays, dock plates, trailer widths — is designed around that footprint.

The European standards: 1200 x 800 and 1200 x 1000

EUR / EUR1 is 1200 x 800 mm (47.24 x 31.5 in) — the classic Euro pallet, sized to fit European trucks and doorways rather than 53-foot vans. EUR2 is 1200 x 1000 mm, closer to the North American footprint. EUR6 is the half pallet at 800 x 600 mm, common in retail display.

Euro pallets in the EPAL exchange pool carry a branded stamp and are repaired to a standard, which is what makes the pool work. An unstamped look-alike is just a pallet.

Where the mismatch bites

The 1200 x 800 Euro pallet is narrower than 48 inches, which sounds harmless and is not. Load Euro pallets into a 53-foot North American trailer and you leave dead space in every row — you pay for air across the whole linehaul. Run 48 x 40 pallets into European distribution and they may not fit the racking or the truck they were never designed for.

Ocean containers add their own arithmetic. A 40-foot container is roughly 92 inches wide inside — enough for two 40-inch pallet depths across, but not for two 48-inch faces — which is exactly why orientation decides the count. Floor-loaded, a 40-footer typically takes around 20 to 21 Euro pallets or about 19 to 20 GMA pallets, depending on how you turn them and whether the last row gets rotated. Other sizes you will meet

  • 42 x 42 in — telecom and paint industries.
  • 48 x 48 in — drums.
  • 40 x 48 in — the same GMA pallet described the other way round; watch which dimension is quoted first, because it decides orientation in a load plan.
  • 36 x 36 in — beverage.
  • 48 x 45 in — automotive.

Wood, plastic, or something else

Wood is cheap, repairable and everywhere, and it is the one that needs ISPM-15 heat treatment and stamping to cross an international border — untreated wood is a shipment-refused event, not a warning. Plastic pallets cost several times more, weigh less, do not absorb moisture, need no ISPM-15 treatment and last for many trips; they earn their price in closed loops and in food and pharma. Pressed-wood and corrugated pallets are the lightweight one-way option for export where you never want the pallet back.

Practical rules

  • Standardise on one footprint wherever your freight actually lives. Mixed pallet sizes wreck rack utilisation and load planning.
  • Match the pallet to the trailer, not the product. The equipment is the constraint that does not negotiate.
  • Watch the height. Loaded pallet height decides whether you can double-stack, which is often the difference between one truck and two.
  • Check pallet condition on receipt. Broken stringers cause the dropped loads and the injuries — we log it at incoming inspection.
  • Confirm 4-way entry if your load plan turns pallets. Two-way stringer pallets cannot be picked from the side, which quietly kills a turned-row plan.
